SCA Schools Competition 2016

THE SCOTLAND-CHINA ASSOCIATION
PRIMARY SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION 2016

incorporating

THE TOM MURRAY MEMORIAL PRIZE

The aim of this competition is to stimulate interest in Chinese culture amongst primary schoolchildren in Scotland.  Children are encouraged to explore Chinese culture and to enjoy expressing what they learn.

The subject of the 2016 competition is :

CELEBRATING FIFTY IN THE YEAR OF THE MONKEY

For fifty years, since 1966, the SCA has been a society of people in Scotland furthering interest in the culture, history and modern progress of China.  Throughout these five decades, despite periods of turmoil, we have maintained links with the country that is developing before our eyes.  In this competition, you can help us celebrate these 50 years of friendship with your ideas.  You can also get inspiration from the Year of the Monkey, which begins on 8 February 2016. You can use painting, drawing, calligraphy, poetry, video or sound.

Competition rules

There are three categories for entries - P1-3, P4-5, and P6-7. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to individuals and groups in each of the categories if the judges are satisfied with the standard of entries.

Group winners will receive a generous prize for the school library, with individuals receiving mementoes.

The Tom Murray Memorial Prize will be awarded to the school with the best overall standard of entries - this is a colourful globe made from valuable stones. The school's name is engraved on the base and the globe is retained by the winning school until the next competition.

Closing date for entries is 25 March 2016.  Schools should please register interest with Peter Lindow by email before 31 December 2015. Any queries about the competition should also be sent to Peter.

Entries will need to be submitted to the prizegiving venue - details will be announced nearer the time.   The prizegiving will be on Friday 27 May 2016.

Background to the competition

The SCA competition was originally run by the Tom Murray Memorial Trust (no longer in existence). Tom Murray was a founding member of the SCA, after distinguished service with the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, and was a respected Edinburgh city councillor. He was a man of courage and principle, and had both a great interest in China and in education, so this competition is dedicated to his memory.

SCA Schools Competition 2014 results

The SCA's 2014 Primary Schools Competition, in co-operation with the Confucius Institute for Scotland's Schools, reached its conclusion on Saturday 21 June at Leith Academy, Edinburgh. Children, parents and teachers from several of the schools involved joined us to view the entries and receive their prizes. The event was also attended by Vice Consul Lv Yanxia, from the Chinese Consulate-General in Edinburgh, who was very impressed by the work of primary school children and their understanding of Chinese festivals.

The aim of this competition was to stimulate interest in Chinese culture, and especially China's many fascinating traditional festivals, amongst primary schoolchildren in Scotland. Children were encouraged to explore Chinese culture and to enjoy expressing what they learn.

We were delighted to receive many excellent entries from seven schools (some of which are seen in the photos above). The standard was very high, and clearly everyone involved had a lot of fun creating a variety of fascinating artwork – may we offer our heartiest congratulations to all !

We also greatly appreciate the kind support of Leith Academy in hosting the prize-giving event, and of the Confucius Institute for Scotland's Schools in promoting the competition and providing prizes. Thanks, too, to the members of the SCA Edinburgh branch who did the judging and worked behind the scenes to make everything go smoothly.
